Cassandra Johnson

Cassandra (she/her) is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and engineer based in the Twin Cities. She grew in North Dakota where she began her journey with music. She was active in concert choir, swing choir, concert band, jazz band, and solo vocal competition from fifth grade through her senior year. Making music with others and working toward a goal has always been strong in Cassandra’s spirit. As she grew in her passion, she decided to pursue a career in music.

Cassandra received her Bachelors of Science in Commercial Music from Minnesota State University Moorhead. In addition to the course work for her degree, Cassandra has extensive formal study in the field of music education. She has a passion for discovery and broadening her experiences, which has given her an abundance of familiarity in music and the music industry. Her formal studies include vocal performance (classical/commercial), vocal jazz, commercial keyboard, commercial ensemble, composition/arranging, audio engineering, and studied steel pan in Trinidad and Tobago. In her free time, Cassandra has taught herself how to play guitar, bass, ukulele, and lap steel. She believes in teaching the music and concepts that are unique to each student’s interests. This is to encourage a healthy relationship with music and creativity. Developing a relationship with her students is foundational for Cassandra’s educational philosophy.

Recently, Cassandra has taken on entrepreneurial endeavors to blend her passion for music with her desire to learn, self-express, and connect with people in an honest way. During the lockdown in March 2020, Cassandra started a social media project which she coined “Friday Riffday”. Her mission was to teach herself guitar with the sudden abundance of time and to track her progress by posting a short clip of herself playing guitar every Friday. The goal of the project is to post something that is reflective of where she was at that moment in her journey, inspiring others to continue creating during this difficult time and to remind her peers to be kind to ourselves. Gaining traction among her followers, Cassandra decided to extend the project in 2021 by asking her followers to post their own Friday riffs. She has been posting every Friday for over a year. Cassandra is also in the process of writing her first full length album.
