The most important part of songwriting is novelty – not merely for the sake of novelty – but rather to create something honest, intentional and something of your own. Of course, it’s easy to rely on the talents of past artists and cobble something together from bits and pieces of songs you already know. But real songwriting is not that easy. It involves persistence, risk, and the ability to listen critically and carefully. We begin by learning how to analyze songs structurally, musically, and lyrically, and then utilize these skills to purge our own ideas of cliché and really write something! Along the way we develop techniques for overcoming writing blocks and pushing boundaries. This workshop will culminate in you, the burgeoning songwriter, having truly written something of your own that you will perform at a final concert at Blue Tree Music Education.
